Towcester's locked sports hub, cricket and grants

Morning Towcester.

This week's strongest local story is still access: a sports hub people can see but can't use, a Youth & Community Centre that's pushed some groups elsewhere, and a grant deadline landing on Thursday.

The BBC reports that the community centre, football pitches, sports courts, changing rooms and parking at Towcester Grange remain closed, 18 months after being completed as part of the housing development.

That matters because this is not a theoretical facility on a drawing. Persimmon told the BBC the pitches and community centre have been signed off by West Northamptonshire Council, the commuted sum was paid in June 2025, and transfer to Towcester Town Council is "imminent". Towcester Town Council says it is working with WNC to get the legal arrangements and financial liabilities properly sorted.

The local frustration is obvious. Towcester Town FC says it has 60 to 80 children on a waiting list while its existing facilities are at capacity. On a new estate full of families, a locked sports hub is a very expensive way to tell people to wait.

Towcester Youth & Community Centre on Islington Road remains temporarily closed while health and safety matters are reviewed.

The new detail since last week's Waffle is practical rather than dramatic: BBC Northamptonshire reports that some regular users have been relocated to the Town Hall and the Sawpit Centre where suitable space has been available.

That still leaves a very Towcester question: what is happening to the groups, clubs and hirers that cannot easily move? If you run or use something that has been displaced, reply and tell us what's changed.

Towcestrians' 25 July Play-Cricket results are in, with two wins from the three senior sides.

The 1st XI beat Loddington & Mawsley by 102 runs, making 256 for 8 before bowling the visitors out for 154. The 2nd XI were edged by Horton House by 20 runs, making 245 for 7 in reply. The 3rd XI had the loudest afternoon: 233 for 6 at home, then Spencer Bruerne all out for 36, a 197-run win.

That is proper local Saturday sport: one big win, one near miss, and one steamroller.

SNVB is pointing South Northants groups towards the Radcliffe Trust's latest funding round, with applications due by 31 July 2026.

The trust funds registered charities, CICs and other not-for-profit organisations working in traditional craft, heritage and classical music. SNVB lists typical grants of £2,500 to £5,000 for music and £2,500 to £7,500 for heritage and crafts.

This is a good 29 July reminder because the deadline is two days after the issue date. Towcester has enough heritage, arts and community groups for a narrow deadline like this to be worth a nudge.

West Northamptonshire libraries' Summer Reading Challenge runs until 12 September, with free sign-up through local libraries.

If the summer holiday is already getting long, this is the useful sort of free thing: children borrow books, collect rewards, and have a reason to keep visiting the library rather than vanishing into screens until September.

SNVB is also flagging the Northamptonshire Safe and Sound Communities Fund for charities and community groups working on community safety, reducing harm or offending, improving community engagement, or supporting vulnerable people.

There is no tight deadline, so it sits below the Radcliffe Trust reminder. But if an NN12 group has a practical safety idea and needs funding, the useful bit is simple: applications can be made at any time.

West Northamptonshire Council's adult social-care survey is open until 30 July 2026, so the 29 July Waffle is the last useful nudge before it closes.

The in-person Big Conversation events were postponed, including the Towcester session that had been listed for the Riverside Centre. The practical bit now is the online survey: if you draw on care and support, care for someone, or have a family view that usually gets lost in the system, this is the tidy way to get it recorded before the deadline.

Let's talk about closed doors.

A town can put up with a lot when it knows what is happening. Roadworks, consultations, fixture changes, building delays: none of these are fun, but most people will grumble and get on with life if the practical information is clear.

What winds people up is being able to see a useful thing and not use it.

That is why the Towcester Grange sports hub matters, and why the Youth & Community Centre needs more than careful wording. These are not abstract assets. They are rooms, pitches, courts, clubs, waiting lists, hirers, parents, kids, volunteers and ordinary weeknights.

Some of this will be dull legal and safety work. Fine. Better dull and safe than rushed and messy. But the public-facing question is still simple: what's open, what's closed, who has moved, who has not, and what happens next?

That is the information people can actually live around.
