Free racing, a Caswell comment window, and a week of local dates

Welcome to your Wednesday Waffle, Towcester & NN12.

September is here, and keeping up with local life means juggling council notices, fixture pages and event listings. You shouldn't have to do all that digging yourself. The Waffle is your local guide: we check the scattered details and bring you the useful five-minute version, so you can stay ahead of what's changing, find something good to do, and have your say when it matters.

This week, that means free admission and a new Monday meeting at Towcester Racecourse, a Caswell application open to comment until 11 September, and the first autumn diary picks. From September, general admission at Betway Towcester Racecourse is free for every guest, every meeting. Children already went in free. Now adults do too. No ticket cost, no catch. Turn up and watch the racing.

The other change that actually moves the week is the fixture. The Wednesday meeting is moving to Monday evenings as The Monday Meet, on the same hours as the Tuesday card. That is one more midweek night the town can walk into, not another Saturday you already knew about.

The racecourse is also talking restaurants, a Sunday carvery, and Bar4000 as a sports bar. Fine. The story for NN12 is simpler: the gates are open, and Monday is now a race night.

Heritage Open Days run from 11 to 20 September, with more than 60 free events across West Northamptonshire.

The local three to put in the diary: Towcester Museum is on the county list; the Sir Henry Royce Memorial Foundation is holding an open day; and Towcester Library is showing an exhibition on Ashby Cars. If you only do one, pick the one you can walk to. That is the point of the fortnight.

Lumentum Technology Limited has applied to West Northamptonshire Council for hazardous-substances consent at Caswell Office, Caswell, Towcester, NN12 8EQ, to increase existing storage and use of hydrogen (30,000kg), arsine (2,000kg) and phosphine (4,000kg). This is an application, not a decision. You can inspect it at the Caswell office during reasonable hours until 11 September, and send representations to WNC's Development Management Division (South Northamptonshire Area) at The Forum, Moat Lane, Towcester, NN12 6AD by the same date. The council then decides whether to grant consent, and on what conditions.

WNC's live roadworks list has Taunton Way and Wood Burcote from 11pm on Monday 31 August through 10.59pm on Monday 7 September. Then overnight from 11pm Monday 7 September to 10.59pm Tuesday 8 September: Richmond Road is closed and Brackley Road is the diversion. That is an overnight job, not a Tuesday daytime one.

TED Alpine Bakehouse is a new coffee shop open at 134a Watling Street. Tuesday to Friday 10am to 3.30pm, Saturday 9.30am to 3.30pm. A High Street bakehouse you can walk into this week.

Northampton Saints beat the Asia Pacific Lions 59-42 on Friday 28 August at the Racecourse International Stadium in Colombo, scoring nine tries in a historic pre-season fixture.

It was a proper back-and-forth in the heat, not a procession. Useful, messy, and done. Now the real calendar starts.

Saints open the 2026/27 PREM Rugby Cup away at Saracens on Saturday 5 September, 15:00, at StoneX Stadium. Franklin's Gardens is still in village-build mode, so the first two cup rounds are on the road.

If you are going, that is a 3pm kick-off in north London, not a home Saturday.

Men's 3rds beat Leicester 3 10-0 in a Saturday 29 August friendly. Men's 2nds beat Bedford 4 4-2 the same day.

This Saturday the Ladies First Team host Towcester Ladies 2 at 10am at Towcestrians Sports Club. Khalsa Leamington 2 follows at 11.45am.

Towcestrians RFC 2nd XV Development Squad are away at Buckingham RFC on Saturday 5 September, 15:00. That is the public senior fixture this week.

Catch-up from Saturday 22 August: Towcestrians 1st XI beat St Crispin & Harlestone 2nd XI, 191/6 to 155, Division Six, 12:00 start.

We haven't seen a result yet from Saturday's home game against Finedon Dolben 3rd XI. Next up is Saturday 5 September, 12:00, away to Geddington 2nd XI.

West Northamptonshire's consultation on council-run adult social care closes at midnight on Wednesday 9 September. Towcester Forum day services are in the review. If you use it, or someone you care for does, get the response in before Cabinet drafts the autumn proposals. Silence is very easy to file away.

From 2026/27, children whose households receive Universal Credit are entitled to a free school meal. WNC wants a fresh application for this academic year, including if you applied before 1 June under the old rules. If you think you qualify, apply now rather than assuming last year's form still covers it.

WNC, FCC Environment and Baby Basics Northampton are taking pre-loved baby items at six recycling centres, including the Towcester tip. Clean clothes (0–3 months), unopened nappies and toiletries, moses baskets, baths and sterilisers (no electricals), plus moses-basket bedding. Book the usual slot, then look for the donation point. Better in a starter pack than in a skip.

Renew169's Cream Tea, Produce & Craft Fayre is Saturday 5 September, 10.30am to 3.30pm at Chantry House, Watling Street, between the Post Office and the Town Hall. Raising funds for the Renew169 Wellbeing Cafe (charity 1196631).

Building trouble at 169 Watling Street means the café is popping up around town for now. Monday to Thursday, 10am to 3pm: Sawpits Centre on Towbury Lane on Mondays and Wednesdays, Chantry House on Watling Street on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Same people. Different door.

BIPC business drop-in — Wednesdays, 9.30am–noon, Towcester Library. Free, non-bookable. Including this morning.

Classic Sports Car Club Grand Prix — Sun 6 Sep, Silverstone GP circuit. Club racing on the full layout. Silverstone lists tickets from £18.

Fun at the Finish Line — Sat 12 Sep, midday to 6pm, Towcester Racecourse. Free-entry family afternoon with a DJ and Towcester Town Studio Brass Band, games, llamas, Hugo the Shire horse, food and greyhound racing. Advance booking recommended.

The Met Office Towcester forecast for Wednesday is light rain and a top of about 22°C, clearing toward evening. Thursday and Friday look warmer and mostly drier, around 24°C. Saturday currently looks the better outdoor day for the fayres and Big Bark; Sunday is cloudier with a shower risk.

September is when the diary gets real again. School is back, Monday is a race night if you want it, and a Caswell application is sitting at The Forum with a comment date of 11 September.
